Adobe Encore CS3 as an application included in the Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 package as well as part of the Adobe Production Premium CS3 suite and Master Collection. This provides the professional user a good reason to consider switching to Adobe or upgrading from a previous version.

Adobe Encore CS3 is a DVD authoring application for the professional user. It continues to offer powerful features, which include new and improved ones too. If you are an Encore user then most probably you are also a Photoshop user as well, and so integration with Adobe Photoshop CS3 is a nice feature. This is seen when creating menus, they are presented as Photoshop files with shape and adjustment layers, as well blending modes. It is also nice to see an amazing amount of preset templates that can be customised and edited within Photoshop too. They are very well organized into categories, all elements are stored in a library where you can use any individual shape, object, image, etc in your created template or menu project, speeding up the workflow of your work assignment.

Also when using Premiere Pro CS3 you can specify Encore markers before exporting it back to Encore CS3, and they will be perfectly preserved within this application. Again it should be emphasised that Adobe place great importance of each individual application working harmoniously together providing time saving solutions to laborious and other tasks. This is also seen in Adobe After Effects CS3, with “Dynamic Link” you can create animations then export those animations perfectly preserved in Adobe Encore CS3. Also another nice feature is the ability to export your Encore CS3 project as flash/swf files for use on the web, complete with DVD-like interactivity.

Moving onto other features that I thought were very helpful and useful, was the flowchart view. This will visually show you whether you have any assets orphaned or unused in your project, the area at the bottom of the screen will show you any errors. The “Check project” button will inspect your project and give you a report of any errors.

The Slideshow editor is another feature that is worthy of a mention because it has a number of customisations that will allow you to add transitions with a number of choices of type of effect and length of the transition to each chosen image, you can also add music to the slideshow as well.

In Conclusion

A first time user would need to familiarise themselves with the interface and perhaps watch a few Lynda.com tutorials or perhaps purchase a tutorial publication on the subject, although included with the package are some video tutorials that are definitely worth watching. Once you have done this, then you are going to feel happy using it.

The very basis of the program presents a fairly easy to learn interface, with a wide variety of templates and individual assets to make up those menus, these individually can also be used in other projects as well thus providing a cost effective and time saving experience. And now this is also available for the Apple Mac user makes this a must have buy for anybody who is a video editing enthusiast and professional, it also comes as part of Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 as well as Adobe OnLocation CS3.

I recently used this for a video shoot in the construction industry, and I have to say it was the smoothest and most straightforward DVD authoring project I have ever undertaken and I cannot recommend this application highly enough. This whole suite is a 5 star rating as far as I am concerned.
