Vegas
Movie Studio was one of the quickest installations
I have ever made on my Vista computer, especially
considering that this is no lightweight package.
The opening screen is the work area, where you
start your creativity. When you first start Vegas
Movie Studio, a screen opens up over the main
screen, offering a choice of tutorials. There is a
whole mass of them. Whether you are a brand new
beginner, or a seasoned professional, there’s
something here that will be of interest.
So, what is Sony’s Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, and how does it all work? Well, this is what it says on Sony’s web-site:
“Vegas Movie Studio+DVD software makes video editing easy and fun. Best of all, Vegas Movie Studio+DVD software is a real-time non-destructive video editor. No matter what changes you make to your video and photos in the software, your original files are never affected. Vegas Movie Studio+DVD software gives you the freedom to experiment and have fun with video editing, without worrying about making a mistake. All Vegas Movie Studio+DVD editions include easy drag-and-drop video editing, integrated DVD layout and burning, and Show Me How interactive tutorials. In addition, Platinum Edition provides added features, advanced editing tools, and other bonus materials to speed you through even the most complex of movie projects from fullscreen DV to widescreen HDV. Version 7.0a build 52 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes”.
When Sony create something, you can be sure that it’s been checked, tweaked, checked again, and after that, they check it again. The end result is usually a masterpiece. And that’s exactly what Sony Movie Studio + DVD Platinum is, an absolute masterpiece of, not just a video editing program, but a complete video editing studio. It even burns your DVDs once you have completed all your editing and manipulation processing. What I really like about this particular program from Sony, is that you are not treated as a complete idiot by ‘holding your hand’ through every process. Nor are you assumed to be an expert and given no help at all. With Sony Movie Studio the help is there if you need it, but doesn’t get in the way if you don’t. Whilst intermediate and advanced users will have little, or no problem plunging straight into the software, Sony has bundled in some excellent animated guides that give everyone easy access to the core functions of this powerful (yet very easy to use) package. They cut straight through arguments of user-friendliness and over-complicated manuals, and get you up and running much quicker than you'd expect. And, as I said earlier, they're just a button click away, whenever you need them. Fantastic!
When you jump into the program you start to realise the true power of this studio software. And the superior expertise of Sony’s developers shines through, as everything continues to work exceptionally well, and very stable to boot. You can include up to four video and four audio tracks, apply effects and transitions with ease, and generally work your way around putting your video creation together with very little, or no interference from the software. Movie Studio will deal with the capturing and importing of footage too, and takes the process right through to the DVD creation stage, from where you're in the hands of the excellent DVD Architect tool. This in itself is a superb piece of software although I found the use of this particular part of the package a bit complicated. However, the excellent tutorials and help files soon ‘put me in the picture’, giving me great fun as I played around with what I had created. Fine tuning to my hearts content.
Platinum Edition is essentially Vegas Movie Studio with support for High Definition Video (HDV) cameras and footage. HDV offers a massive quality jump over Mini-DV. As technology is progressing, especially in the field of Digital photography - still and moving. HDV cameras are going to become more and more popular, and - hopefully! - more and more accessible to people on a modest budget. The superior quality of HDV over DV is incredible. And yet, just a few years ago, everyone was dumping their super 8 cameras for DV camcorders. If you are fortunate enough to be in possession of a HDV camera, or are using HD footage, then you will immediately realise the power of Vegas Movie Studio Platinum. However, you will also realise that a much higher spec computer is needed for the HD editing. Especially if you are playing around with multiple files.
The thing that I like, probably the most, is that, no matter what you do within Movie Studio, you can do no harm to your original footage. This gives me great confidence, and courage! to really mess about. Added to this is the knowledge that you can integrate as many as four movie and four audio files, means the rest is just up to your imagination, warped or otherwise!
Integrating frames from video footage into other video clips is really fun. With Vegas Media Studio it’s just a case of drag and drop. Once you have stopped being silly, and start being serious, the end results can be very impressive. I can’t help being silly, Sony has made it so easy, and so very safe, for me to do so!
On a much more serious note. This has to be the very best video editing software available for the home user and enthusiast alike. And ideal for anyone on a limited budget venturing into the world of wedding or corporate video editing as a means of earning some money, whether as a full time profession, or just part-time to start with. Sony’s Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition is a very affordable addition to your movie moments, regardless of its quality. You will soon find that your ‘finished’ works of art will make you realise that you just can’t do without Movie Studio. I recommend it to everyone with a camera.
