For instance, I recently sent a CD to a friend in Canada. It contained almost a DVD full of photos that I wanted him to see. So I zipped them all into an EXE file, and burned them onto a CD. All he had to do was to click on the file and it automatically uncompressed them.
However, this just saved a DVD, but it shows what is possible, especially if the other person only has a CD drive and not a DVD player, as with much older computers.
The main purpose of compressing files is to save on disc space. This is important even in the world of multi-GigaBytes, or even TeraBytes.
