Let’s
not argue, this is a lot of program for very little
outlay, £20.00 at today’s exchange
rate. It just depends on how fussy you are about
your computer housekeeping. ‘Clone
Tools’ searches for ‘Clones’ and
‘probable clones’ and it was the 'probable clones'
that thru’ me to begin with. When is a clone not a
clone …when it’s a 'probable clone.'
I ran a very simple test putting two identical files into a folder. The only difference was that one was a ‘Word 2003’ document and the other was a ‘Word 2007’ document, the contents of both files were identical. When scanned, Clone Tools' ignored both files and they didn’t even show up as a 'probable clone' which is what I thought would happen.
Whilst I was a little disappointed at this, with Clone Tools you’ll soon know your PC inside out. The twin browser compares files side by side to check they are identical before you press delete although in actual fact ‘Clone tools’ will not let you delete a file unless it is an identical file which is a pretty good safeguard.
It is so easy to accumulate identical files without even realising it. My lap top is barely three months old yet when I ran the program it quickly became evident that clones had crept in, in this short space of time.
Another good feature is the fact that ‘Clone Tools’ works with folders and not just files. It will weed out identical and similar files comparing clones in different folders simultaneously in the preliminary scan then automatically performs a second, more in depth scan byte by byte, revealing identical files whilst bringing to your attention files that are almost similar leaving you in control to decide their fate.
A useful demonstration of this program can be found at www.pilotman.com , a short video demonstrates the clone process and shows just how useful the twin browser is together with a host of unique tools that will filter, compare and merge files until your pc is completely free of identical files.
For those who are paranoid at the thought of misusing kilobytes, megabytes and even gigabytes doubling up on the job then shelling out £20.00 is small fry to keep your computer system in minimalist condition.
