Lineform
is a software for mac, a vector illustration
application, it is unique for its powerful
capability coupled with an easy to understand
interface, various tools and effects are segregated
into various windows which you can choose to
display or hide. this is ideal for a novice right
down to the professional who uses a more
complicated alternative. Lineform is also noted for
its inexpensive price, but if you think a
simplified interface & a low price means lack
of features think again !
lets consider its tools and features.
First of all we have the bezier drawing tool for painting, freehand pen tool, shapes such as squares & circles, everything is editable such as rotating, resizing, scaling, you can move and delete points as well. The text tools are excellent, like with most applications you can create a text box and type what you want, you can create a shape and choose text as a fill in option, which has the advantage of typing whatever you want and it will fill the shape you have chosen. Additionally the strokes you make can be chosen to be text, which means text can be the outline of the shape you are creating, text can also be created on a path as well. Being artistic is definitely an advantage with this mac application you have the choice of several brushes and filters which gives you authentic paint brush effect, some of the effects lets you distort the image you are creating, crystalize, posterize, apply blurs, or place a drop shadow all done very easily. There are arrows, all types of lines, to which you can control the opacity as with objects too. A real attractive feature of this program is the provision for layers, something you would not see for the light of day in less expensive applications, with these layers you can lock them, hide them and reposition them, connected to this is one feature that I am really pleased about namely the ability to import jpeg files, which can be used as a tracing layer, if like me you are not that artistic you can gain inspiration from other works and customize them according to your taste. simply use the tools to draw an outline and then use various colours and gradients etc, I actually own a Wacom graphire 4 tablet , these are excellent for making the job easier, although if you have never used one, then you will need to get used to it. Additionally you can import PDF and EPS files. As regards exporting you can save to BMP, JPEG, PDF, PNG, TIFF, SVG and EPS. Finally this application is great for enthusiasts and one fantastic vector illustration software for logos, drawings, maps, flow charts, outlines, etc. With the benefit of layers many will not see the need to purchase one of the more expensive alternatives, however for a full blooded professional this will speed up your workflow in certain projects. and with a price so inviting I cannot imagine many enthusiasts who use a mac will refuse such an offer. It is hard to find fault with Lineform, and already it has gained massive popularity and we would encourage any mac user to try out their artistic ability with this application, who knows !
