Overview

Create your web site in just 5 easy steps;” so says the website X5 homepage. And it does just what it says on the box. Using a step-by-step wizard style interface, multi-page websites can be created in a matter of minutes. No scripting or programming skills are required. Clearly ideal for the home or small business user.

Product Description

Incomedia Website X5 is available in two versions; Compact at £34 and Evolution at £59, both prices include VAT. The latter includes many additional features and is well worth the extra £25.

Website X5 Evolution offers all the usual features you would expect from a web publishing tool. There are 1000 colourful, and surprisingly tasteful templates to chose from based on personal and professional themes. Content editing is extremely simple, using a drag-and-drop interface. It’s easy to add text, images, tables, and so forth. Multimedia objects can also be incorporated such as flash animation, video/sound files, and slide show presentations.

Impressive Features

The Evolution version includes the facility to add an E-commerce cart, RSS feeds and restricted ‘reserved areas.’ Again, the drag-and-drop user interface makes the whole creation process simple.

What about web accessibility? Some WYSIWYG programs look sleek, but produce sloppy, inaccessible script. All sites created in Incomedia Website X5 are compiled into XHTML 1.0 Strict. Checking the pages on the W3C mark-up validation service (http://validator.w3.org/check) reveals a clean bill of health; the pages are produced in valid XHTML 1.0 Strict.

Comparison With Other Products

Website X5 by no means has competitive advantage in this home user/small business niche market. Other strong contenders offer very similar products in the same price bracket such as Namo WebEditor (£51 inc VAT http://www.namo.com/) and the well established Serif WebPlus 10.0 (£59 inc VAT http://www.serif.com/). However, Website X5 is sensibly priced and recommends itself as a quality product that does everything it should, and more.

Verdict

Website X5 Evolution is reasonably priced, intuitive and has impressive features. The hold-my-hand, wizard style interface is not every one’s cup of tea, thus serious web professionals will not be satisfied. All in all however, a quality product which does exactly what it says on the box: “Create your web site in just 5 easy steps.”
