There are
so many photo editing programs on the market now it
is hard to decide which one to buy. For the home
user who takes photographs and the occasional
videocam on his camera, Magix Xtreme Photo and
Video Manager is a good choice as it combines both
of these operations in one package.
It does a fairly decent turn in arranging, importing, viewing and presenting photographs. Additionally some basic video editing features are provided.
One novel feature of the update is to allow face recognition. Here you scan a set of photographs with faces and then tag them so that you can easily find photographs of the same people – or people with the same looking faces. I was a little sceptical of this but having tried it, I can say it works remarkably well. If you have lots of family and friend shots this is a great feature and worth buying for this alone.
You can also sort your photographs by user-defined rating or date order. This is nicely done, although I would have liked more preferences to make it more versatile.
The usual features for editing and enhancing photographs are included and these are simple to use yet do a remarkably good job of quickly optimising photographs. Too many people simply take photographs, copy them to their PC and use Slideshow to display them to their friends. It is remarkable how good a photograph can look once it his been optimised for colour, exposure and even cropped. Magix make this process very easy to do and are to be commended for their attention to detail.
There are still some integration issues to resolve and the interface is looking a little dated compare to the competition, but for sheer value for money this program is hard to beat especially when you consider the free extras – Photo Clinic, Print Studio, Mobile Photo Suite and Mobile Music Maker. I could go on and mention the online services such as Online Album, Print Services and others.
