Adobe CS3 users will already be aware that included with the software are training tutorials to get you started, and that is exactly what they do, get you started. However there is much more one can do with all applications included in the CS3 series, and learning these by yourself would indeed be a challenge, so then where can you go to speed up the process, well Lynda.com have lots of video training which is a subscription based website, and in my opinion the very best source. However some prefer to possess their own training which they can pull off a book shelf, and use to brush up on their skills and refresh their memory. In this case example I was pleased to be able to evaluate this fine publication “ Video Training Book - Adobe Flash CS3 Professional With Rich Shupe.” Most of us realise that Flash or swf plays a large roll in presenting information advertising products and constructing websites, and if you have bought Adobe Flash CS3 you would have done so to fulfill this purpose if not for yourself certainly for others. Therefore what I was looking for was a simplistic easy to use and understand format that would provide a running methodology for any of the CS3 applications in this series, I was not disappointed ! Included in this packaging was a box with a video training disc, a reference guide to follow along with, and very importantly exercise files so I could copy what the instructor was doing.

My next question that was to be quickly answered was, how good is the instructor ? A fair question really, to an expert in a field they can perform functions as second nature, but could they explain it to a newcomer to understand ? that is where a good teacher shows his true colours. Rich Shupe undisputed expert on Adobe Flash CS3 performs teaching techniques in an effective way, quickly I was able to understand the principle of a task or action, that means for me not only was I able to do what he was doing, but I was capable of applying the method to my own set of media files, in my own chosen projects. For instance if you were learning a language, the key would be for you to think in that language as opposed to converting words into a foreign language, Rich does this, he gets you thinking in the Adobe Flash CS3 methodology, in time you would be able to perform a task as second nature as though you were speaking in your native tongue.

In conclusion this publication provides everything you need to master working with flash, and it does it very well, the price is good and I feel happy to recommend this to any newcomer or someone who wants to brush up on their skills.

When you think of Adobe you think “Industry Standard” another words Adobe have set the standard in software applications that most professionals use, and what a professional uses would be considered complicated and time consuming to an inexperienced observer. If you are a new user of a product like Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 you will want to learn as quickly as possible the basics and get right into the detailed aspects of the program. The Video Training Book series from Lynda.com are designed to help newcomers and enthusiasts.

The question is though, are they effective ? Well I certainly think so !

On opening up the package, I was impressed to see a reference book, a CD-ROM full of tutorial videos and the exercise files to follow along. Each lesson does not go on for too long, and the instructor clearly and slowly takes you through each lesson meaning that the student can adequately follow along at a pace he or she can cope with. The reference book is nicely set out in a large font size, paragraphs are placed with plenty of space so that it is not confusing to the reader. What particularly impressed me was the fact that each lesson has a brief description of what will be accomplished, and the purpose it will serve, coloured screenshots accompany the paragraphs assisting the student to know what to expect when applying the methodology.

Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with Garrick Chow is pure excellence, he thoroughly and logically takes you through “Getting Started and Exploring The Interface” right up to “Publishing Your Site” I was impressed with his relaxed pleasant manner coaxing the viewer and carefully explaining the more challenging aspects of a task within Adobe Dreamweaver CS3.

At £35.99 its a steal, when you consider the hundreds of pounds it would cost for you to attend a class. If that was not enough, you also gain access to 300 plus tutorials on the Lynda.com website for one month. What can I say if you are struggling with Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, then get yourself a copy now. Struggling is a thing of the past. You won’t regret it !

(Hands On Training) Adobe Flash CS3 Professional is another lynda.com offering that helps new and intermediate users of the industry standard Flash application to become quickly acquainted with its features and benefits. I cannot recommend this highly enough, it approaches training with a great deal of detail, each chapter contains step by step exercises that any enthusiast would be able to follow. In addition to this are colourful screenshots and images as well boxes that highlight tips and main points to remember.

The presentational format is extremely beneficial, each chapter begins with explaining the purpose of its content, keynote pages that explain definitions and methodology as well as important notes to remember, leading to exercises that apply the information presented. Included with the publication is a cd-rom that contains all the exercise files needed as well as some training videos to enhance the readers progress.

Todd Perkins the author of this fine publication is an Adobe Certified Instructor, which should give any budding web designer or video editor confidence that he or she should master this application within a reasonable amount of time.

If you are an Adobe Flash CS3 user and are familiar with the main features of the application, then progressing to the next stage namely learning Action Script 3.0 will unlock a whole new world in creating fully interactive applications, which includes web games, and other web presentations. As always this demands extra effort in learning but the publication “ActionScript 3.0 For Adobe Flash CS3” part of the “Hands On Training” series by Lynda.com, makes the effort very much worthwhile, not only is this just a book but it also contains exercise files and training videos to make the interested reader feel more at ease in grasping a new concept.

The publication authored by Todd Perkins takes you through a step by step process by introducing ActionScript 3.0 to communicating with it, it is assisted by screenshots and other illustrations bringing to life what is being explained.

This in my opinion is the best publication to purchase if you want to get to grips with the more advanced side of Adobe Flash CS3.
