Gone are
the days when the audio and midi side of things
were two separate applications for Magix Studio -
all that changed with a pervious release, and what
a step forward that has been. We now do, as the box
says with the advent of Samplitude Music Studio 14,
have a programme that is: "The comprehensive audio
workstation" (although of course it's not the only
one), but at this price arguably the best value for
money. With excellent effects easily applied to
whole tracks or clips within a track, it's very
easy to use, with a clearly written manual to help
those new to music making.
As well as instruments previously included in version 12, the Vita synth from YellowTools includes some excellent new guitar and percussion sounds - together with it's own reverb and delay effects, and Revolta 2 - a 12 voice synth that would appeal to many users; again it has tremendous potential and variety in the sounds it can create. A VST plug in called Atmos is included - designed to provide realistic background sounds such as nature and city noises, although third party plug-ins can be employed. It is all straightforward to use with clear and detailed instructions in the enclosed manual on installation and setup, with guidance on editing procedures in some detail for both audio and midi in the video tutorial. We have a very useful tool with the Track Editor - this enables access to all the parameters of the selected track and really can speed up workflow. The effects are of a high quality; especially good is the vintage effects suite containing chorus, delay, distortion, filter. flanger, and others; especially when you consider the price of this software.
The score facility - the abilty to notate what you play within a midi track, arrange it, then print it out - is particularly of interest to "reading musicians" - this is something found usually in more upmarket sequencers, as is the "freeze" function which "bounces down" a CPU intensive piece of audio - maybe with some heavy effects on - so as to free-up the computer to run more tracks. Two huge improvements in our opinion are the automation possibilities now avaliable both for instrument and effect parameters, and hardware controller support - this was an obvious omission with previous versions (although for the price we certainly couldn't complain) but we're pleased to see it included with this release.
So it really is a whole studio package. From clear informative instruction videos through to exporting a track in a variety of formats, it's simple to use, and excellent results can be attained helped along by the Mastering Suite - to give the final touch to your track. Add to this fully automatable surround sound, multitrack recording (of particular interest to bands recording several tracks at once), ReWire support, and Samplitude Music Studio 14 proves itself to be excellent value for money with many powerful features and impressive effects you would only expect in more expensive software.
